Today wasn’t the magical day one would hope to have on their wedding day. Dark gray clouds, rain falling, the chill of the wet air. But all that didn’t matter for Aurora and Sean. After knowing each other for nearly 10 years this couple new that their love was far beyond the gorgeous blue skies, it was more, something meaningful and lasting. I admire Sean’s for the openness of accepting Aurora as a daughter and a sister. Not just as a “daughter / sister in law,” but as a true daughter and a true sister. It really made me happy to see both of these families come together so well. This is what it’s all about. Congratulations to these two! Here are just a few from today.

The town of Whittier, Alaska. Secluded from the rest of world so to speak. Prior to 1980, the only access was by boat, but now its accessible through the longest tunnel in the United States, 2.5 miles to be exact. Because of their love for adventure, this served as the perfect location for Kimberly and Dave to hold their wedding. After arriving, we spent 3 hours running around town taking photos and enjoying the spectacular blue skies. Soon after we headed back to the Inn at Whittier for the ceremony. The reception turned out to be rather comical. My favorite part was introduction of a particular bridal game. Kim and Dave, along with both of their parents, were seated next to each other. Questions were asked, the girls had to guess what the guys would say. The funniest question of all was “What animal does your mother-in-law remind you of?” At this time, it was Kim’s Dad’s turn to answer. His response “There is no way I’m answer that one, she maybe passed away but she can always come back and haunt me.” Everyone was laughing hysterically. It was great to see the involvement and excitement of everyone there. Best wishes to Kim and Dave for a happy-ever-after marriage.

Randi–an excellent guitar and trumpet player–has been living the life of a traveling/college musician in all of the big cities around the US. While currently pursing a degree in music at Berkley, she plays in the band “MRS DANVERS” [ http://bit.ly/6GvLy ], “a delightful primo like al dente, buttery powerpop pasta with juicy lyrics and plump musicianship.” (Cheap Thrills Boston). I met Randi through her mom, Kristy, whom I work with. During a gap between shows last summer, Randi was able to fly up to Alaska to visit friends and family, in the mean time we were able to get these photos done one Saturday in July. Be sure to check out her music and buy the album on iTunes http://bit.ly/4Ijt8U .

For Her, he’d do anything, anything in the world. Matt poured his heart into Karla and she gladly poured her’s into him. Matt and Karla haven’t been together long but, they knew from the beginning that this was it. Laughing, traveling, hiking, snow-machining, helping others, these two share everything together. Best friends. The greatest match two people could ever find. When I saw Karla at the beauty salon, unwilling to wipe the smile from her face, and Matt, setting up the last bit of decorations only moments before the ceremony (not because he had to, but because he wanted to make this day everything Karla dreamed it to be, everything needed to be perfect for her)…I knew this was going to be a wedding to remember. And it was…it sure was.

Matt and Karla I’m so happy both of you are genuinely outstanding people, you deserve to have the best together. And even though the best could be absolutely nothing at all, I know that, together, joy would still radiate from your hearts. Thanks for letting me capture all of the laughter, games, and love, both of you express for each other. You have inspired me. Continue doing so for all of those down the road.

Two equally giving people, perfectly matched to better the world, together.

As I mentioned in a previous post, Mark and I go way back. We spent lots of time together throughout middle school and high school playing video games and causing trouble. Now that we’re adults, it’s really exciting to see our lives change and progress. Keri and Mark got together right after I moved away from Charleston. Although I wasn’t there to see their relationship develop, now that I’ve seen them together, I know they are surely perfect for each other. I’m very glad that you brought me down to celebrate your wedding with you. Thanks Keri and Mark! I know you will love your pictures!

Today, I decided that I would take the day and go flying. Although I’m only learning how to fly at this point. I was able to fly the plane once we were up in the air. We flew over downtown Charleston and out over-top the ocean. The lighthouse you see in the picture is the Morris Island Lighthouse, which played a sufficient role in the American Civil War. The winds were surprisingly calm with semi-clear skies, it was a great first time flying in Charleston.

On the second day of my trip, Chris, James, and I were brainstorming ideas for the evening and landed on the idea of taking some photos in downtown Summerville. We called a few different friends, Lucas and Emily ended up being the only ones available on such short notice. Regardless we packed up the gear and headed to Main St.

Here are the images we captured; I love the way the camera makes the Christmas lights in the background appear. It’s like magic.

This week I’m going to be back down in South Carolina for another destination wedding. One of my really old friends from high school randomly stumbled onto my website while searching for wedding photographers. He immediately picked up the phone when he realized it was me. After working out all of the details for the wedding, plane tickets were purchased and I was on my way to shoot his wedding.

I arrived in Charleston on Wednesday evening. Whenever I arrive, its a small tradition to head to the beach and walk along the coast. Alaska is gorgeous but there is something about the beach that always pulls me back to it. It was a lovely evening and after I was able to get some dramatic images of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge glowing in the foggy sunset.

Today was my first time flying with Joe! It was spectacular! Joe flew out from Anchorage to pick me. Right after, we headed out to the Knik Glacier for a couple passes through the valley. Although the skies were a little cloudy, it turned out to be very pretty, not to mention that there was absolutely no wind. Joe and I have more plans of flying all over the place. I must say that flying is the absolute best way to see Alaska. Check out the huge glacier, just so you know, were about 500ft up in this shot.

This Thanksgiving was pretty awesome because I got to experience a whole different world. In the past, I’ve always spent the Holidays with my family. This year I decided to have Thanksgiving dinner with some of my friends, Joe, Brook, Nick, and Madelin. Basically all of us enjoyed the day by talking, playing videos games, eating, and playing multiple games of “Apples-to-Apples” (which Joe ruled at). The food was great, especially for free! Joe and Brook scored a free turkey because they spent loads of money at the store just to get the thing, was it really free? Who knows? It was delicious though, I guess that’s all that matters. All of us had a great day, I hope everyone else had the same just as we did. Enjoy the rest of your Holiday everybody!

We got there just as the sun was setting and were able to get some nice twilight sky photos as well. When we were all too cold we headed in and got some more photos next to the fireplace. What a beautiful family! They were all so nice and great to work with. Even their dog was super photogenic!

On Saturday night after my family photo shoot with Nick, I didn’t feel like going home, so I decided to see if there was any life downtown near Ship Creek area in Anchorage. It was really cold outside which created this fog/haze low in the air. The city lights from Anchorage illuminated the sky and washed everything with an orange pink color glow. The abnormal colors made the location more ever more dramatic and dead. I should have probably got out of the Jeep and took more pictures but I was a little afraid of being attacked a homeless person out toward this end of town. Anyways, here is the shots from the car.

Back in August I took a workcation, well I just made that word up but it means a work/vacation at the same time. Mike and Baillie flew me down to Charleston, South Carolina to photograph their wedding. I have know Baillie since high school, but after I moved to Alaska, I lost touch with her. Thanks to Facebook, I saw a post that she was getting married and I instantly began pursuing the opportunity…

Here are some pictures from my first day there.
